The Shady Oaks Farm Story
THE DREAM
The dream of The Shady Oaks Farm began for me as a little girl growing up in Vermont. When I was five years old, my parents introduced me to horseback riding and immediately I was hooked!
THE JOURNEY BEGAN WITH HORSES
As I was growing up, I continued riding while also being obsessed with all animals, knowing I wanted to have my own farm one day. Although I continued riding horses throughout my life, it wasn’t until my early thirties that I began creating a plan. Once I had children, I wanted to share my passion with them as well as other people, so I began teaching riding lessons.
THEN CAME THE GOATS
Having the opportunity to move to the San Luis Obispo area, we acquired a horse boarding facility in Atascadero, CA. About the same time, we discovered my child was allergic to cows’ milk so I tried goats’ milk with great success. I decided instead of buying goats’ milk, we would buy the goat and milk our own. I purchased a doe from a reputable breeder who was serious about showing and improving the breed.
In 2006, my kids attended a field trip to a local pumpkin patch where dairy goats were also raised. There we met and fell in love with Princess Pink and Sara! What started as just wanting pets grew into showing and breeding. As my knowledge grew, so did my desire to produce top quality goats with amazing production which led me to learning and searching for the best of the best breeders.
THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES...
All along, I was still teaching and riding horses. In 2012, having always admired the Iberian breeds, I answered an ad for an Azteca mare for sale. It was an immediate love connection, and so began my passion for these amazing horses.
In 2018, my dream became my reality when I purchased the land to build The Shady Oaks Farm. We have 5 Iberian and 2 miniature horses, as well as over 22 goats. We look forward to educating and sharing our passions and dreams with you!
